South Carolina has a population of some 730,000 white-tailed deer. Although the state is not known for large-antlered deer, it tends to receive less hunting pressure than many other states in the South, and it has long seasons and generous bag limits.
South Carolina has no closed season or bag limit on private property and hunting of wild boars is not limited. In some years, hunters may take as many as 35,000 pigs.
The region’s seaside communities include salt marshes, estuaries, and bays. Many of these bodies of water are home to large swarms of migratory birds. The Piedmont is largely forested, with the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains reaching a height of 3,560 feet.
There are huntable black bear populations in two areas of South Carolina: the mountains and upper piedmont, as well as the coastal plain. Bears are hunted with and without dogs throughout the year. In South Carolina, it is legal to hunt alligators. Tags are given out through an annual drawing. If you’re looking to hunt on public land, there are a few places that stand out. Sand Hills State Forest has over 46,000 acres great for both hunting and fishing. It’s especially popular for deer, turkey, and quail hunting. Santee National Wildlife Refuge is a great option, with over 13,000 acres of forest and wetlands to explore, it’s the ideal habitat for good waterfowl hunting. Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge is also worth considering – it’s the largest refuge in the state, and it’s teeming with all kinds of animals. Finally, Francis Marion National Forest is a vast expanse of forest of more than 370,000 acres that’s perfect for deer, turkey, and waterfowl hunting.
